In the essay "Casa: A partial Remembrance of A Puerto Rico Childhood" by Judith Ortiz Cofer, the author describes how woman gather in the living room on rocking chairs to gossip about men and marriages. Here the author is a child of twelve listening to her grandmother and aunts, while her mother braids her hair. I remember when I was about ten or eleven my sisters and cousins would get together every holiday and just talk about everything they can find to talk about. It was really boring for me because at the time I was interested in things like playing hide and seek, tag, and other games like that. The girls talk about the simplest little things like how they wanna do their hair to things like that. They sit around in the kitchen or sometimes in the bedroom just to separate away from the boys. The older ladies such as my grandma and aunts sit and talk about other things, they tell stories about when they were young and things they miss. There was a story that my grandma told me about when she was young and how she goes out and come home late nights and sitting in the dark was her father waiting there with a belt. I was really interested in her story, I was telling that story to my family and friends. They thought it was a really funny story.

A Day In The Homeless Life

"In A Day In The Homeless Life", Author Cole Russell writes about living in the homeless shelter, an institution often associated with Thanksgiving as Salvation Army soup kitchen become the focus of television news stories. A homeless life is a really difficult situation to be in. I've never actually been in a homeless shelter but if I was to be in a homeless shelter I would probably go crazy, I wouldn't be able to live with a whole bunch of strangers. I worked at the Salvation Army, as a volunteer. I loved doing volunteer work at the Salvation Army it was a really fun experience. On the month of November we have a can food drive and on Thanksgiving we make lots of food for the homeless. We are very caring about the homeless and we care about them. That's why we have these things every year and on Christmas we also have something familiar, we have lots of gifts, we wrap them up and put if boy or girl on it. On the day before Christmas I wake up early to meet up with my bible study teacher. So we can put the gifts in bags and give them away to families that don't have much money to buy presents for their kids. I felt great about what I was doing. It's a great feeling and something I will never forget. Thanksgiving and charity is a big part of life because it's a day of thanks and a day we can give to people. I could imagine how it feels like being in a homeless shelter. Having to wake up everyday in the early mornings and worrying if I'm going to be okay. Not knowing where to go when they tell me to leave it can be very frustrating. For example in reading of A Day In The Homeless Life by Colette Russell, she was robbed, and another example she had to carry all of her belongings with her every where she went. In writing this blog I wouldn't be able to live in a homeless shelter.

Visitig Around Merced

In Merced there really isn't much places to visit. Merced is a really small place. If you want to visit Merced, the Merced County Fair would be a nice place to visit. It only comes around once a year in July, but it's a great place to visit. There is lots to do at the Merced County Fair. There are rides, games, and food. Also a great place to bring families and friends to get together. Merced County Fair it's not the biggest place but it is fun and interesting. When ever the fair comes along I make sure I don't miss it because it only last one week so I make sure I don't miss out on all the great fun. The fair opens from 4pm to 12am. There is a petting zoo they have that opens much earlier than regular fair. The petting zoo lets you touch the animals and watch a baby animal being born. Some people may think that's nasty to watch a baby animal being born, but actually it's interesting and eye catching. The fair is a great place to be it's lots of fun and it's something you don't want to miss out on. So if you want to visit some place in Merced wait until July and you'll have blast at the fair.
